Born Lulendo Matumona, the 62-year-old singer and songwriter died on Monday, December 27.
He died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Cameroon’s capital, Douala.
While announcing Defao’s demise, fellow rhumba star Ferre Gola Le Padre said Africa had lost a star in the fallen musician. “The great Baoba of Africa has just left us. I’m overwhelmed by this sad news hitting us. Deep regret for this tremendous loss for Africa, DRC and Central Congo. Only him left! Rest in peace old General Defao Matumonam” wrote Ferre Gola.
Defao started professional music in 1976 signed under Orchestre Suka Movema before moving to Fogo Stars Korotoro and Somo West in 1978.
In his career, the goner has collaborated with other great Congolese rhumba artistes among them the late Papa Wemba, Bozi Boziana, sweet-voiced Mbilia Bel, Kanta Nyboma Mwan Dido, and Wuta Mayi.
