Hooker George back in England squad after speedy return from injury

Hooker Jamie George has been named in the England squad to face Japan at Twickenham on Saturday despite initially being expected to miss the entire Autumn Nations campaign.

George suffered a foot injury on club duty for Saracens against Leicester on October 1 and it was believed he would be out for around 10 weeks.

But the British and Irish Lions front row, who has 69 England caps, has been included in Eddie Jones’s 36-man training squad for this weekend’s match.

England bosses will hope George can show sufficient fitness to support starting hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie as they look to rebound from a shock 30-29 loss to Argentina on Sunday.

There are also returns to the squad for Northampton duo, fullback Tommy Freeman and scrumhalf Alex Mitchell.

Wing Jack Nowell said simple fixes should ensure England get back on track after their defeat against the Pumas.

The penalty count finished 10-10 and Nowell said: “If we sort out the discipline it would have been a completely different game. We know exactly what we need to fix.”

He added: “We weren’t looking at each other in the changing room after the game and thinking ‘how have we lost that’. We know why we lost that and probably deserved to.

“The confidence is there among the team. We’re going to stay together and stay tight.”

England will face New Zealand and world champions South Africa later this month.
