KANU Endorses Kalonzo For Azimio Running Mate Post

  • In a letter to the coalition’s Deputy President Selection Panel, Mr. Moi said Musyoka is the most suited person for the role.
  • The selection and vetting process is set to be finalized by May 10, after which Odinga will unveil the successful candidate to the public.

KANU Party led by Gideon Moi has endorsed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the preferred candidate to deputize Azimo La Umoja-One Kenya flagbearer Raila Odinga in his August 9th presidential election.

In a letter to the coalition’s Deputy President Selection Panel, Mr. Moi said Musyoka is the most suited person for the role.

“It is our considered opinion and strongly believe that Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka fits the bill and is the most suitable individual to deputize Raila Amolo Odinga,” stated Moi in the letter dated Wednesday, May 4.

“It is our sincere hope that this panel will consider and find him appropriate for the position of Deputy President and consequently recommend his selection as such.”

The endorsement comes just a day after the seven-member panel advising Odinga in choosing a suitable running mate asked affiliate parties to propose candidates by Thursday, May 5, and not show up for interviews as earlier directed.

“Constituent party members of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance that wish to nominate any person for consideration as a candidate for the position of Deputy President to submit the name by April 5,” a Wednesday statement by the panel’s chair Dr. Noah Wekesa read.

KANU’s endorsement gives the Wiper leader a major boost in his quest to deputize Odinga, which has courted a lot of contention after Kalonzo said he would not be appearing before the selection panel for vetting.

Candidates being considered for the deputy president’s post under an Odinga presidency had been directed to appear before the panel from Wednesday, May 4 through Tuesday, May 10.

Kalonzo had, however, dismissed it as “demeaning”, arguing that he should be an obvious pick for the position.

The selection and vetting process is set to be finalized by May 10, after which Odinga will unveil the successful candidate to the public.

All this is against the May 16 deadline which presidential aspirants have to submit their running mates to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
