A multi-agency team comprising Kenya Defence Forces soldiers on Wednesday gunned down suspected Al Shabaab terrorists in an anti-terrorism operation mounted in Lamu County.

During the operation which took place at around 1:00pm, the law enforcement officers raided an active Al-Shabaab camp in Kumba, near Pandanguo and neutralised 6 members of the Al Shabaab terrorist group.

Reports indicate that a foreign national was among the Shabaab members who were neutralised during the operation.

Besides neutralising the suspects, the officers also seized logistical supplies which the suspected terrorists are said to have used to run the camp.

Following the raid, law enforcement officers committed to continue being vigilant in an effort to stamp out terrorism activity.

Authorities appealed for public cooperation, asking Kenyans to share information on suspicious activities within their environs which will play a major part in clamping down on terror.

The raid on the terrorist camp came days after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in Elwak, Mandera County killing five and injuring five others.

It was reported that the IED was straddled on the back of a donkey cart, so as not to attract the attention of law enforcement.

The device is said to have exploded in the town centre a few metres away from the Administration Police Post in the town.

The Mandera explosion was one in the series of explosions that had been recorded over the course of the year.

In another instance, on April 9, several people lost their lives after terrorists targeted and torched a truck and pickup van in the Milhoi area of Lamu.

The torching of the vehicle resulted in a heavy gunfire exchange between the police and terrorists where two people passed away.
