Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Thursday, July 6, reportedly eliminated a suicide bomber in Lamu County as the operation against suspected militants heightens.

Garowe Online was the first to report that the suspected Al-Shabaab militant had been neutralised while approaching Camp Sarira in Lamu County with the intention of harming Kenyan servicemen.

Camp Sarira houses multi-agency security forces working around the clock to quash the recent surge of terrorist attacks in the country.

Reports indicated that the suicide bomber reportedly died on the spot before he could reach for a detonator.

KDF was yet to release a statement on the incident.

The military neither confirmed nor denied the incident. Colonel Zipporah Kioko, the KDF spokesperson, asked for more time to confirm the incident.

“I have to confirm first when it happened, and give detailed information thereafter,” she stated.

Colonel Thomas Mwanga was also cagey with the information, referring us to his bosses as the matter was above his purview.

“I have no details of the operation at the moment but that can be furnished but you can speak to my boss for more details,” he told Kenyans.co.ke.

Hours before the attack, unverified reports claimed that KDF officers protecting Camp Sarira had downed a surveillance drone.

Reportedly, the drone controlled from an undisclosed location was used to collect intel at the multi-agency camp.

A week earlier, suspected terrorists killed five people in Salama Village in Lamu County and burned several houses to the ground, prompting security agencies to heighten their operations.

On Sunday, June 18, 10 General Service Unit (GSU) officers were injured in Lamu County when their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, pledged to flash out suspected terrorists. He also postponed the reopening the Kenya-Somali border until the security situation improves.
