Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Japan near Shinshiro, Aichi.
The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday, April 7th, 2022, at 9:30 am local time at a shallow depth of 11.6 km.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter.
It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Shinshiro (pop. 36,100) located 1 km from the epicenter, Toyokawa (pop. 120,500) 12 km away, Toyohashi-shi (pop. 378,400) 18 km away, Gamagōri (pop. 80,800) 25 km away, and Aichi (pop. 352,400) 30 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Toyota (pop. 362,400) located 37 km from the epicenter, Anjo (pop. 178,400) 38 km away, Nishio (pop. 103,300) 40 km away, and Nagoya (pop. 2,191,300) 62 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
