Marked ballots, Chaos Rock UDA Nominations

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which is led by the Deputy President William Ruto is holding its nominations across the country on Thursday.

In the run-up to the August elections, leaders affiliated with the Deputy President Kenya Kwanza coalition will battle for tickets in various political seats.

On Wednesday, DP Ruto urged all aspirants to keep the peace during the election campaign.

Thirteen counties will nominate gubernatorial candidates, 18 for the Senate, and 28 for female representatives, while 13 constituencies will nominate parliamentary candidates.

However, there have been delays reported in various polling stations, scattered across the country.

In Bomet County, the exercise has been delayed in most parts of the county after a number of aspirants came out to protest reports of already marked papers in favour of some candidates.

The aspirants, led by former COTU boss Wilson Sossion, complained about pre-marked ballot papers, accusing the Returning Officer of distributing polling materials without sufficient security on Wednesday evening.

The aspirants threatened to stop the process saying the party should consider postponing the whole process to a later date.

In Embu, polling materials were on Wednesday confiscated and burned by some rowdy youths. The party has already summoned aspirants suspected to be behind the scenes.

The nomination exercises, however, kickstarted well in some other regions, with some areas yet to dispatch the voting materials to respective polling stations.
