The 36-year-old forward turned down a move back to his boyhood club Barcelona and also rejected chances to extend his stay in France with the Ligue 1 winners, electing to move to the less heralded MLS for a change of scenery.

The move out of Europe has led many to suggest that Messi aims to drop a level as he prepares for retirement, but the Argentine maestro has denied these allegations, saying he intends to bring his best to Inter Miami.

Messi promises highest levels at Inter Miami

The 2022 World Cup winner is set to be unveiled by Inter Miami on July 16th, the same day as the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and he has assured fans of the club that he intends to bring the same level of competitiveness to the MLS.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Messi said, “My mentality and my head are not going to change and I am going to try, wherever I have to be, give my best for myself and my new club, continue to perform at the highest level.

He also affirmed his belief that he made the right choice by joining Inter Miami ahead of Barcelona and PSG, saying, “We are happy with the decision we made. Prepared and eager to face the new challenge, the new change.”

Messi is a favourite to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or award after his exploits at the World Cup with Argentina and could earn a record eighth award this year.
