Wiper party insists Kalonzo is still running for presidency

The Wiper Democratic Movement Party insists that its leader Kalonzo Musyoka is still in the race for the presidency despite joining the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Addressing journalists after chairing a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Nairobi, the party’s national chairman Ali Chirau Mwakwere said Kalonzo had not withdrawn his candidature for the country’s top job.

This appears to throw a spin into the Raila Odinga fronted Azimio group in which Wiper is one of the coalition partners.

“Kalonzo is still our presidential flag-bearer since he has not yet withdrawn. This was a decision of the National Delegates Conference and there is no way he can unilaterally quit without the delegates’ green light,” Mwakwere said while briefing the media.

He explained that the party leader did not attend the NEC as he had other engagements in his rural Kitui County, but added that he will clarify the candidacy matter once he is back.

Mwakwere, accompanied by Wiper secretary-general Shakilah Abdallah and vice-chairman Ogeto Swanya among other party officials, was hard-pressed to explain the fate of One Kenya Alliance (OKA) following the exit of co-principals Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula who have teamed up with Deputy President William Ruto to form Kenya Kwanza coalition.

“Have the principals told you that OKA has disintegrated? Our NEC is not in a position to comment about it, ” he said in response to a question.

Since joining Azimio, Kalonzo has maintained a rather reclusive stand, implying no deal was reached between himself and Raila during a recent show in a local TV station.
