A section of lawmakers on Thursday, July 6, condemned a manager attached to a Limuru-based company for allegedly forcing female staff to undress at work.

Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri Wangechi called on the government to formulate policy requiring private sector players to install appropriate waste disposal facilities in workplace restrooms.

She argued that with proper disposal facilities, female workers at the Limuru-based company would not have been forced to undress by an unethical manager for disposing a sanitary towel in the wrong bin.

She thus implored the government to launch a nationwide operation to ensure compliance.

“Listening to that statement, the company did not have the right working conditions for women because for a woman to dispose of a sanitary towel in a dustbin, it means in their washrooms do not have disposal facilities.

“I will call authorities to visit factories to ensure they have proper places for their sanitary towels,” Kagiri insisted.

She responded after Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha raised the issue in Parliament. The lawmaker informed parliament that the managers who had forced female staff to undress for throwing a sanitary pad in the wrong bin had been apprehended.

Wamuratha vowed to ensure justice is served to the victims.

“I will take this matter up to ensure justice is served and these multinationals start taking care of people they have employed and to note that they owe an apology not only to their staff but the women of this country,” Wamuratha stated.

Thika Town MP Alice Nganga called on the national government to collaborate with employment agencies to protect the right of workers. She lamented that many workers, especially women, were suffering in silence.

What Police Said

Limuru Sub-County Police Commander Philip Mwania, on Thursday, July 6, confirmed the incident indicating that the suspects had been apprehended.

“We got reports on Wednesday, July 5, from women working in the company. The act was inhuman and uncalled for. We visited the company and managed to arrest three top female management officers. They are in our custody, and the statements have been recorded and awaiting to be taken to court,” Mwania stated.

The company later announced that the managers involved had been suspended.
