Elon Musk’s social media platform, formerly Twitter and now known as “X,” has disabled a feature that allowed users to report political misinformation. This move has raised concerns about the potential spread of false claims just before major elections in the United States and Australia.

While users can still report other issues like hate speech, the removal of this reporting category has drawn criticism from Reset.Tech Australia, a research organization, which questions X’s commitment to combating serious misinformation. X has faced previous accusations of allowing hate speech and misinformation since going private in 2022.

Elon Musk has suggested that the “Community Notes” feature is a better way to fact-check, but its effectiveness depends on user ratings.

Australia’s internet safety regulator and the Australian Electoral Commission have expressed concerns about the spread of hate speech and electoral misinformation on the platform. Despite the removal of the reporting feature, the AEC maintains its ability to report political misinformation directly to X and is available to answer questions from users.
